Zimbabwe GK Arubi reveals his key to success after shining against Nigeria at 39

At 39, Zimbabwean goalkeeper Washington Arubi is defying expectations in the Betway Premiership, proving that age is no barrier to success.

As one of the oldest active goalkeepers in the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL), Arubi continues to shine for both his club, Marumo Gallants, and the Zimbabwe national team, recently delivering a stellar performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nigeria.

Arubi, who will turn 40 in six months, has remained a key figure for both club and country, despite his advancing years.

He has been a regular starter for Gallants, making 17 league appearances so far this season, and has also maintained his position as Zimbabwe’s number one goalkeeper, ahead of the younger Elvis Chipezeze of Magesi FC.

Despite the rising competition, Arubi’s performance against Nigeria in the World Cup qualifiers further solidified his reputation as one of Africa’s most reliable goalkeepers.

In an interview with FARPost, Arubi shared the secret behind his longevity and success in a demanding profession.

"First of all, I want to thank you for the recognition of being one of the oldest goalkeepers in PSL. To be honest with you, I always try to keep my discipline on point every day and push myself every day to do better," he said.

Arubi attributes his continued success to his commitment to discipline both on and off the field.

The Zimbabwean international's regimen includes extra training sessions, which he believes are crucial for maintaining his peak performance levels.

"That means I always give myself extra training sessions, and I do make sure that I train twice a day, considering our schedule," Arubi explained.

This consistent work ethic is something that has kept him in excellent shape, even at the age of 39.

He emphasized the importance of controlling his diet, drinking habits, and ensuring adequate rest to stay fit.

"It’s all about believing and putting in the work, no matter what, you know how our industry is," Arubi added.

His words reflect the dedication and resilience that have defined his career, with the veteran goalkeeper not only focusing on physical fitness but also mental strength.

Arubi's philosophy extends to managing the inevitable challenges that come with age.

"My wish is to stay fit and pray every day not to experience long injuries," he said.

While acknowledging that injuries are part of the game, Arubi remains grateful for his health and continues to push himself despite the wear and tear that can accompany a long career.

His mindset has allowed him to persevere through the highs and lows of professional football.
