Norway-Vulcan Area Schools eliminates math position
NORWAY, Mich. (WLUC) - A Dickinson County school eliminated a math position on Monday.
The Norway-Vulcan Area School board unanimously voted to eliminate the school’s math interventionist position.
The math interventionist worked alongside teachers to increase student proficiency in math.
Norway-Vulcan Area Schools Superintendent Lou Steigerwald says the school has been operating in a deficit for some time.
“We have to do something about the massive amount of fund equity we’ve been bleeding for some time now,” Steigerwald said. “It’s added up over time. It’s something that’s been discussed before. We talked about it in a committee meeting, and it was recommended to the full board from the committee. And that’s the direction the board decided to head.”
An attendee, Lisa Carlson, says the position gives important support to students.
“I came to support keeping the math intervention,” Carlson said. “I think it’s an important position for our students, especially the ones that struggle with math. Just extra help.”
At the meeting the board provided a budget forecast citing the school’s operating deficit to be between almost $470,000 to $540,000 for the 2025-2026 fiscal year.
