Kallas: We hope the EU will reach a decision today to lift sanctions on Syria

Brussels, SANA High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, hoped that EU foreign ministers, during their meeting in Brussels Tuesday, will reach an agreement to lift economic sanctions on Syria.

According to Reuters, Kallas stated ahead of the meeting: “Clearly, we want to ensure that the Syrian people have job opportunities and livelihoods so that the country becomes more stable.”

Officials confirmed that EU ministers are considering a political decision to lift economic sanctions while maintaining sanctions imposed on the al-assad regime and implementing measures against human rights violators.

On February 24, the European Union announced the suspension of certain sanctions previously imposed on Syria under the former regime, specifically those related to the banking, energy, and transportation sectors.
