SIOUX FALLS — Tysen Hovden earned a third-place finish to lead Vermillion to a 10th place team finish at the South Dakota State Class A Boys ‘Tennis Tournament. The two-day event concluded Tuesday in Sioux Falls.
Sioux Falls Christian ran away with the team title, scoring 540 points. Rapid City Christian (378.5) finished second, followed by St. Thomas More (363) and Huron (252). Vermillion finished with 118.5 points.
Hovden finished third at flight three singles, beating Huron’s Htoo Say Zan 8-2 in the third-place match. Hovden dropped a 7-6 (0), 6-1 decision to Elliot Huxford of St. Thomas More in the semifinals.
Vermillion’s Mason Freeling finished fourth at flight five singles, dropping an 8-5 decision to Leyton Kenner of Rapid City Christian in the third-place match. Freeling lost to Sioux Falls Christian’s Logan Boyle 6-0, 6-1, in the semifinals.
Vermillion’s Theo Wittmuss dropped a 8-6 decision to Spearfish’s Levi Poling in the fifth-place semifinals at flight six singles.
Vermillion’s Lucas Green earned the consolation title at flight two singles, beating Lennox’s Connor Sherard 8-1. Vermillion’s Hayden Fogelman earned the consolation title at flight four singles, beating Spearfish’s Brooks Meyer 8-6.
Fogelman and Freeling won the consolation title at flight two doubles, beating Lennox’s Chase Lundquist and Cameron Smith 8-1.
The Tanagers will graduate Caiden Mandernach (flight one doubles and singles) and Wittmuss (flight six singles, flight three doubles).
After the opening day Monday, Sioux Falls Christian (360) and Rapid City Christian (328) held down the top two spots in the team standings. St. Thomas More (266) and Pierre (214) are third and fourth. Vermillion ranked tenth with 95 points after the opening day.
Vermillion’s Tysen Hovden, seeded third, advanced to the flight three singles semifinals with a 7-6 (5), 6-0 victory over Aberdeen Roncalli’s Linus Johnson.
Mason Freeling, who entered the tournament as the fifth seed at flight five singles, earned a spot in the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-2 upset of Huron’s Ler Hai Moo.
Theo Wittmuss was upended by Ethan Fischer of Rapid City Christian, 6-2, 6-0, in the flight six singles quarterfinals.
Vermillion’s Lucas Green advanced to the consolation final at flight two singles with an 8-2 victory over Spearfish’s Leo Isburg.
Hayden Fogelman advanced to the consolation finals at flight four singles for the Tanagers.
Caiden Mandernach (flight 1) was eliminated in the consolation semifinals.
Fogelman and Freeling advanced to the consolation finals at flight two doubles.
Mandernach and Green (flight 1), and Hovden and Wittmuss (flight 3) each went 0-2 to be eliminated in doubles.
