TEHRAN, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei on Thursday strongly condemned the U.S. government's vote against a United Nations Security Council draft resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Baghaei said in statement that the U.S. move on Wednesday to prevent the passing of the draft resolution amounted to its "complicity in Israel's crimes," terming it as "a blatant disrespect by the U.S. government for the demand of the international community and the West Asia region's peoples for ending Israel's crimes."

He added that over the past decades, the U.S. had consolidated Israel's impunity by vetoing UN Security Council draft resolutions on several occasions.

The draft resolution, tabled by the 10 elected members of the UN Security Council, would have demanded an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the immediate lifting of all restrictions on humanitarian aid, and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups.

It won the support of 14 out of the council's 15 members, but the United States, which holds veto power, voted against it.
